Sometimes, relationships can be grating, especially long-distance ones. Usually, they can be salvaged, but the point of no return is when you and/or your partner start keeping tabs on what they have over the other person (something pretty demoralizing for both parties). In other words, when the back-and-forth starts to feel transactional.
